Before misconduct,
there was a boundary.
Preventing educator sexual misconduct (ESM) starts long before misconduct occurs. It starts with honest conversations about professional boundaries, vulnerability, warning signs, and the circumstances that can put both educators and students at risk. By bringing these conversations into the open and providing education, resources, and opportunities for early support, the goal is to protect students while helping educators to recognize risk, to seek help, and to make different choices before boundaries are crossed.

Meet the Host
Dr. Shannon McFarlin is a licensed professional counselor-supervisor, certified school counselor, counselor educator, and tenured professor of clinical mental health counseling with 30 years of experience in mental health and education. Her interest in educator sexual misconduct comes from both professional experience and a deeply personal connection to the issue. Seeing firsthand how profoundly these situations can affect students, educators, families, and entire communities led her to ask a question that receives far too little attention: What can be done before a boundary is crossed? She is passionate about creating space for honest conversations about educator vulnerability, professional boundaries, prevention, and early support - with the ultimate goal of protecting students by preventing harm before it occurs.
